Leadership Training for MedinaCares Clubs

Redmond, WA — Newly elected MedinaCares student leaders took part in a leadership training session designed to prepare them for leading their clubs sessions more effectively. The workshop was designed for the 18 MedinaCares students leaders, including Captains (grades 4–5) and Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Treasurers (grades 6–8) across 5 after-school clubs including Debate, Community Service, Gavel, e-newspaper and Social Media.

Led by ninth grader Sameen Khan of The Overlake School, the session focused on building confidence, communication, and accountability. Khan, who recently completed a college-level ethical leadership course, designed the training to introduce transformational leadership and help younger students grow into their roles.

Students began with an icebreaker, personal and club specific goal-setting activity, then explored key leadership traits such as responsibility, empathy, and leading by example. Role-based groups practiced clear communication through an “Announcement Challenge,” while mock meetings gave students hands-on experience in collaboration, decision-making, and problem-solving.

A team tower-building activity reinforced teamwork and shared responsibility, followed by a discussion on trust, respect, and ethical leadership. The session concluded with a leadership pledge, with each student committing to their club goals for the remaining year, strengthening a sense of accountability and community.
