Gavel Club Sparks Growth in Young Speakers
The MedinaCares Toastmasters Gavel Club for Public Speaking is seeing extraordinary progress this semester as its 12 student members move from extreme shyness to confidently sharing personal stories in front of their peers. Meeting every Thursday, the club has quickly become a supportive training ground for students working to overcome fear, build communication skills, and develop their public-speaking abilities.
When the club first began, many students were hesitant to speak at all—some struggled even to say their own names aloud. Club supervisors say the transformation since then has been significant. Students are now delivering one- to two-minute narratives about their lives, a milestone that highlights both their growing confidence and their willingness to step outside their comfort zones.
A major focus of the club this semester is the Icebreaker Speech, a foundational Toastmasters project that encourages speakers to introduce themselves through a short, structured presentation. Members are currently drafting their content, with plans to present their speeches by the end of the semester. The Icebreaker will mark the first formal speech for many of the students and is considered a key achievement in their public-speaking journey.
Attendance has also been a standout success for the Gavel Club. With near-perfect participation each week, supervisors note that the students’ consistency reflects their enthusiasm and the strong sense of community the club has fostered.
As the semester progresses, the Gavel Club continues to help young speakers build confidence, develop leadership skills, and discover their own voices. The club’s early achievements suggest even more growth ahead as students prepare for their first official speeches and take on greater challenges in communication and self-expression.
